The 23 Things @ SJS -- a Web 2.0 course for St. John's School teachers - SP2009.

Welcome St. John's School Web 2.0 teachers! This could be quite an intense course to be conducted during our 2009 Spring Break (March 23 to 27, 2009). We will meet everyday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. The "thing" assignments will all be due by April 30, 2009.

that will help you learn about Web 2.0. All the "Things" are available here for your perusal. We'll see if we can finish all "Things" in about a month. ;->
Each "Thing" consists of one or more
Discovery Exercises and Learning Tasks
. Links to the details for each "Thing" are all available everyday in the F2F meetings. Remember, I will demonstrate all of the Web 2.0 tools covered in the things as you follow along with me in our F2F classes. After that, you are in charge of your learning journey. This course is about exposure, exploration and experimentation, not about "doing it right" at first try.
Along the way, you will also encounter a few
activities accompanying some of the "Things" in Shelley Paul's site. Stretch activities are designed to enrich and extend your learning. Everyone is encouraged to try at least some of them, but they are not required. If you are already comfortable with a particular tool or concept, you should definitely complete the Stretch activity!
Each of the "Things" below links to an activity on the

, as created by Shelley Paul. While we will be completing the
identical set of activities
"SJS Web 2.0
" course will occasionally require a
different "publishing protocol"
for completing a particular task.

RSS and Google Reader
Populate your Google Reader with at least 20 RSS feeds on topics that interest you.

How about for your own professional development?
What types of RSS feeds did you search for?
What is your favorite/the most interesting feed you found
What was easy to do with RSS? What was difficult with RSS?

- Learn about Creative Commons
Create a blog entry on Creative Commons (CC) -- guide questions:
What is the significance of Copyright Law (C) in your job as a teacher in a school in Guam?
How about (CC) -- what is its significance in your teaching? Do you think it is important honor (C) in education?
Students (esp. older students) do not respect (C) at all when downloading, using and distributing copyrighted materials online. What do you think should be done about this? What might the effects on society be on this kind of practice?

Create a blog entry after watching one K12 Conference Online. Guide questions:

Did you like what you watched/listened to? Was the topic significant in your teaching or professional development (why/why not)?
What was the online watching/listening experience like? Did you like/not like it?

- Explore one or more tools of choice (Gliffy, Quizlet, Ta-Da List, SketchCast, etc)
Explore a Web 2.0 tool of your choice as described in the email I sent to you. You will present / share this with the class.
- Blog about something interesting you've found in your Google Reader
Social Bookmarking & Tagging
- Intro to Social Bookmarking; Set up a Del.icio.us account and begin adding and tagging resources. Please explore the "Stretch" things if you already have a Delicious account.
Create your own "Delicious" account and start populating it with links. For this assignment, add at least 10 links on: Web 2.0 or your subject area that you find interesting or links that you visit often / would like to share with others. *Make sure to add appropriate tags - think about the tags you are using before entering them with the links.
As an extension of your learning and experience with Wikis and linking, create a NEW PAGE in your Wiki. Then create a line entry for EACH assignment with an appropriate link for easy retrieval.

*If an assignment only requires a visit to a specific website or a website of your own choice, then just link to that website with the line: "I completed this assignment Thing!"

- Intro to Podcasting; Explore some educational podcasts
Go through Thing #17 above. Add a few podcasts to your Google Reader subscriptions.
- Create a "Bare Bones" podcast using VOCAROO
Create a podcast as explained in Thing #18 above and create a link to it in your "Assignments" page. Create a "substantial" podcast aside from any "test" podcast you've created.
Blog about your podcasting search and creation experience. What specific podcasts / type of podcasts would you listen to regularly?
What do you think of Vocaroo? How can podcasting in your teaching curriculum?
